Today's English Shepherd at AppleYard

Shep, the apple of AppleYard
The English Shepherd, long a tradition on rural farms and ranches all across this great country, has become a rare breed of late. Although; no longer necessary as a farmer's partner to bring in the cows for milking, or move the sheep to greener pastures, today's English Shepherd has made an easy transition from farmer's partner and cottage protector to compatible home companion.
Right at home playing with the kids, or sleeping by the hearth, the amiable English Shepherd has made an easy conversion to urban family life as playmate and protector.
America's generic dog
The English Shepherd is the "Peter Pan" of the dog world. These Shepherds remain America's generic dog as a conscientious teammate in competitive sports such as Agility, Speed-ball and Obedience; however, children are their forte, always playful and dedicated to high spirited play and frisky adventures with their youthful pals and playmates. And... as a protector without equal.
About the English Shepherd
The English Shepherd’s quiet and gentle temperament is the defining characteristic of the breed. With great intelligence, and a unique type of kindness for those in his home, he holds affection for both animals and people alike.
English Shepherds are adaptable and learn routines quickly. The are watchful of strangers and are classified as guard dog neutral ready to sound the alarm, but will rarely attack. They tend to become one-family dogs. Once she accepts people or children or stock as her own, there are few better caretakers than an English Shepherd.
Colors range from black and tan, tri-color (black, tan, and white), black and white, and sable and white (pale honey through deep mahogany).
The English Shepherd is classified as a medium size dog 18 to 24 inches at the shoulder, weighing between 35 and 75 pounds with medium length coat.
Because these dogs have never been bred for the show ring they have retained a natural variation in features such as ear set, tail carriage and variable markings.

Really an Old Fashion Dog

AppleYard Kids & Pups
AppleYard breeding stock is selected from the best bloodlines from all across the Country.
Some of my dogs have been flown in from as far away as Texas, Louisiana and South Carolina to insure I have included in their progeny the very best of the old lines that made the English Shepherd the dog of choice in rural America for so many years.
My English Shepherds are registered with the United Kennel Club as opposed to the AKC for a very specific reason. In order to preserve the very best qualities of the English Shepherd breed, I refuse to breed for uniformity. It is my belief that artificial standards of conformity are an anathema to the on-going good health, temperament and well-being of the breed.
My pure breed's are just that. I do not fool with Mother Nature to produce a fashionable dog of color or size merely to satisfy the conventions of style. My dogs are the very same dogs that have survived the test of time for centuries. It is my belief that because I do not tinker with the gene pool, I are able to avoid so many of the ailments, infirmities and disorders that have become so prevalent in the trendy show ring dogs that are in vogue today.
